Anti-Islam Video Protests

Egypt's top Muslim cleric on Saturday called for an international ban on all forms of attacks against Islam, after a provocative film sparked violent protests in the Middle East and North Africa.
Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, grand imam of Cairo's Al-Azhar, the highest seat of Sunni Muslim learning, underlined "the need for an international resolution [banning] any attack on Muslim religious symbols", in a statement addressed to UN leader Ban Ki-moon and published by official news agency MENA.
The resolution should "criminalise attacks on Islamic symbols and on those of other religions, after the violence against those who provoked challenges to world peace and international security," said Tayyeb.
The imam said it was the UN's responsibility to "protect world peace from any threat or aggression", so that "these dangerous events cannot recur".
He also called on "Egyptians in these trying times [to show] wisdom and restraint", condemning the targeting of innocent people and underlining the need to protect foreign diplomatic missions. [AFP]

Anti-Islam Video Protests

Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti, the highest religious authority in the birthplace of Islam, on Saturday denounced attacks on diplomats and embassies as un-Islamic after deadly protests against a US-made film mocking Islam's founder.
Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al al-Sheikh also called on governments and international bodies to criminalise insults against prophets and excoriated the film that has prompted a wave of fury across the Middle East.

"It is forbidden to punish the innocent for the wicked crimes of the guilty, or to attack those who have been granted protection of their lives and property, or to expose public buildings to fire or destruction," he said in a speech carried by state news agency SPA.

British DM: Troops Could Withdraw From Afghanistan Sooner

More Troops May Be Able to Leave in 2013

by Jason Ditz, September 14, 2012
New comments from Defense Minister Philip Hammond suggest the British military is considering speeding the rate of its withdrawal from Afghanistan, saying he is surprised by the “readiness” of the Afghan forces.
Britain is scheduled to withdraw 500 troops by the end of this year, but had not previously scheduled further moves until 2014, when the remainder of their forces would leave. Hammond says they are considering moving troops out in 2013 now.
Though British officials are denying that this is the case, it is believed that the growing number of “green-on-blue” attacks against NATO occupation forces has convinced Britain to move out while the getting is good.
Britain is one of several NATO nations hoping to remove their troops by the end of 2014. Though the US is pushing this date as the “end” of the war, President Obama signed a deal to keep troops in the nation through 2024.
and look at this nonsense from Iraq - so they want the UN to issue laws binding sovereign nations...

Iraq’s top Shiite cleric calls on U.N. to criminalize insults against prophet

Iraq’s top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani urged U.N. to make any insults against Prophet Mohammed an offense. (AFP)
The United Nations should criminalize any insults against Prophet Mohammed, Abdul Mehdi al-Karbalai, the representative of the top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Iraq, said during his Friday sermon.
Iraqi protesters burned U.S. and Israeli flags as thousands of people demonstrated for a second day Friday in cities and towns across Iraq against an anti-Islam film that has sparked outrage in the Muslim world.

Karbalai said that “these repeated abuses could threaten peaceful life, especially among (religiously) mixed peoples.”

He also condemned violence in response to the film, which portrays the Prophet Mohammed and Islam in a negative light, and sparked deadly fury in Libya, where four Americans including the ambassador were killed on Tuesday in a mob attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.
In the biggest protest, thousands of people turned out in the southern port city of Basra, carrying Iraqi flags and shouting slogans including: “There is no freedom by abuses to the feelings of two billion Muslims.”

The protesters burned American and Israeli flags, an AFP correspondent said.

Hundreds of people also protested in the Sunni-majority Adhamiyah area of north Baghdad after Friday prayers, while dozens of people, mainly from various Shiite parties, also demonstrated in the capital’s Tahrir Square.

In Sunni-majority Ramadi, west of Baghdad, hundreds of people demonstrated against the film.

Hamid al-Fahdawi, one of the protest organizers, told AFP that demonstrators want the Iraqi government to dismiss the U.S. ambassador and cut economic ties with the United States.

Dozens of demonstrators also turned out in the former Sunni insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, also west of the Iraqi capital.

Sadr al-Din al-Qubanchi, a senior Shiite cleric who leads Friday prayers in the shrine city of Najaf, called for the United States to apologize to Muslims and surrender all those who worked on the film to a special Islamic court.
The governor of Nineveh province, Atheel al-Nujaifi attended a demonstration against the film in Mosul, in north Iraq.

There were also protests in various cities in Diyala province, and in other cities and towns including Hilla, Amara and Nasiriyah.

US Renews Japan, EU Waivers to Bypass Iran Sanctions

Satisfied that Japan, EU Have Cut Oil Purchases

by Jason Ditz, September 14, 2012
The Obama Administration has agreed to renew waivers to the European Union and Japan for another six months to allow their banks to bypass US banking sanctions against Iran. The sanctions threaten to cut companies off from US financial markets if they do business in Iran.
Officials say the move reflects administration satisfaction that both are reducing purchases of oil from Iran at a sufficient rate. The EU has a full embargo on Iranian oil, while Japan has reduced purchases significantly, per US demands.
The Obama Administration is keen to see Iranian crude oil exports slow the fastest, but this is also having the largest deleterious effect on the global economy, as oil prices rise worldwide because nations like Japan and South Korea are now biding for the remaining supply instead of buying from Iran.
Japan’s Bankers Association has said as much, issuing a statement earlier this week complaining that the US-imposed limits on oil purchases are putting Japan’s economy in a difficult position, and as they continue to reduce nuclear power generation they will have to buy more and more oil from less and less US-approved sources.

Netanyahu: Can’t Rely on US to Attack Iran

Argues Against Waiting 'Until the Last Minute' for War

by Jason Ditz, September 14, 2012
Speaking on the occasion of the Jewish New Year, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argued against waiting “until the last minute” to attack Iran and start a major regional war, arguing that they can’t count on the US to start the war themselves.
“What if the US doesn’t act?” Netanyahu said, saying that he has been pressing the US for a commitment on when they would start such a war but that they have been reluctant to do so.
Netanyahu also rejected accusations he was “meddling” in the elections in the United States, saying that since Iran’s civilian uranium program hadn’t stopped his pressure on the US couldn’t stop just because of election season.
Netanyahu and President Obama are in the midst of a dispute surrounding both the question of Iran and Obama’s refusal to meet with him during his upcoming visit to the US. Obama is scheduled to do an interview with David Letterman instead.
