British forces in Syria, Assad presidential compound said under attack
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report June 26, 2012, 11:59 AM (GMT+02:00)

Unconfirmed first reports from British, French and Turkish sources say British special operations forces crossed from Turkey into northern Syria Tuesday, May 26, and advanced up to 10 kilometers inside the country. The same sources report heavy fighting around the Presidential Guards compound on the outskirts of Damascus.
DEBKAfile’s military sources note that this compound exists to defend Bashar Assad’s presidential palace on Mount Qaisoun overlooking Damascus.
British and Gulf TV stations are again running interviews with dozens of Syrian soldiers taken prisoner by rebel forces and transferred to Free Syrian Army centers in South Turkey. But this time, they are being aired in conjunction with those two developments, indicating pivotal and coordinated military action inside the embattled country, or even the start of western intervention against the Assad regime.
Later Tuesday, Gulf military sources confirmed the presence of British special forces in Syria.
Our military sources estimate that the British military drive into Syria, if confirmed, is designed to establish the first safe zone along the Syrian-Turkish border, to be followed by more Western military incursions to establish additional zones of safe asylum in other parts of Syria.

This follow-up action would depend substantially on Syrian, Russian and Iranian (+ Hizballah) responses to the initial stage of the operation.
The reported British incursion, if confirmed, occurred at the tail end of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 24-hour visit to Israel Tuesday morning and would have posed a direct challenge to his repeated warning that Moscow would not tolerate Western military intervention in Syria and actively prevent it. Similar warnings have issued from Tehran.
As for the timing, the double military drive against Assad also occurred hours before a NATO “consultation” in Brussels on the shooting down of a Turkish warplane by Syria last Friday, June 22, which Ankara stated Monday “must not go unpunished.”

All Too Predictable: Bilderberg Plan to Force NATO’s Turkey Into Syrian War

Last Friday saw a Turkish combat jet downed in the Mediterranean Sea by Syrian antiaircraft batteries. Syria insists that Turkey’s F-4 Phantom was shot down inside Syrian airspace.
It appears to be a Neo-Ottoman baiting exercise by NATO, and for all intents and purposes, it has worked - so far.
Regardless of the facts surrounding this event, the western media machine and political operators will seek to quickly leverage this event in their efforts to move their inevitable Syrian bombardment project forward.
To date, NATO’s role for Turkey has been to remain in the shadows, hosting the Syrian National Council, coordinating arms shipments in Syria for foreign fighters, and giving refuge to al-Qaeda rebels across Turkey’s border with Syria. But this latest jet incident is likely to change all that.
As was predicted within hours of the initial event last week, Infowars.com – whose analysis was once again days ahead of the mainstream media, accurately predicted that this incident would be used to pull the Turkey further into a central position in NATO’s plan to engage Syria:
If the West and NATO is to enforce a Libya-style ‘no fly-zone’ in Syria, then Turkey would be the tool of choice to run such an operation. In case you missed it last Friday, here is the interview hours after the incident – another example of how this website sits much further ahead of the geopolitical analytical curve than the whole of the multi billion dollar-capitalized mainstream media:The corporate mainstream media is of course already positioned to spin this story into a pretext for a war between NATO and the Syria’s Assad government. The world must not forget that this is the very same corporate media who aggressively sold a collection of lies, including a White House concocted fantasy of 500 tons of yellow cake uranium sold to Iraq via Niger, and the same corporate media who attempted to slander Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame as they exposed the Vice Presidential office’s lies of an Iraqi nuclear program – lies which were ultimately successful in getting the United States public to back a full-scale war and permanent military presence in the Middle East.Ignoring the obvious fact that the last thing Syrians want is to undergo a comprehensive NATO bombing campaign that will most certainly level the country, the mindless and reckless corporate media in the US and its affiliates worldwide, along with state-run war propaganda outlets like the BBC in Britain, have predictably jumped on the Turkish jet incident as an exciting opening gambit in a much anticipated military intervention in Syria. Their choice of wording, identical talking points streamlined perfectly across all media outlets is both cynical in nature and frightening in rhetoric – a reality constructed in order to force the public and political classes into an intellectual cul-de-sac where ‘there is no other alternative’ other than military intervention. TheWashington Post naturally leads this media onslaught of consensus reality building, as they normalize war talk:NATO condemned the downing of a Turkish jet by Syria last week as “completely unacceptable” but gave no indication it would take retaliatory action. The prime minister of Turkey, however, said his country would react militarily to any future violations along its border.Shooting down the jet Friday was “another example of the Syrian government’s disregard for international norms of peace, security and human life,” NATO said in a statement issued in Brussels. “We stand together with Turkey in the spirit of strong solidarity.”The language of war should be all too familiar by now.In past years, the US Secretary of State’s role was often that of chief diplomat and negotiator in sensitive foreign affairs. Hillary Clinton is a prime example of the new breed of foreign cabinet envoy, whose new role is to promote wars and foreign intervention to both the American public and to other foreign NATO ally affiliates. Condoleezza Rice made this role acceptable, cynically deployed by the Bush Administration on an ever politically correct modern American populace, this new role as ‘Secretary of War’ was more effective than ever when played by a woman (and a Democrat), rather than the traditional warmongering alpha male character, and even more so by an African-American woman – another calculated move by the Bush government which was ultimately effective in pushing their illegal war on the American public. Their efforts will always be backed by a mere handful of predictable political war hacks like Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman, along with John Bolton.Clinton and her British counterpart William Hague, had shamelessly pushed for the destruction of Libya in 2011, and have continued in similar fashion through steering groups like The Friends of Syria, openly coordinating the procurement and shipment of arms via Qatar and Saudi Arabia to their guerrilla army and al-Qaeda cells within Syria. As we can now see clearly, it’s a long-running project of destabilization with the ultimate goal of regime change and balkanization in that country – designed by western intelligence and globalist banking planners.Clearly in this case, the globalists are in a rush to advance the agenda in Syria, and then move on to neutralize Hezbollah in Lebanon, and finally, the engage Iran – and with this, the first major sparks of a new Third World War. This final move will set the stage for a long-running regional arch of tension which is designed to encompass both Russia and China. This year’s schedule of world events was most probably visible somewhere at the Bilderberg Meeting in Chantilly, VA. The Syrian agenda was most certainly signed-off by the Bilderbergers and delivered to their Syrian National Council representative, Bassma Kodmani, who was in attendance at this year’s Bilderberg Meeting. Globalist Kodmani is said to be the Head of Foreign Affairs with the SNC, working out of Istanbul, Turkey. Also in attendance at this year’s Bilderberg Meeting was British agent and steering committee member, Marcus Agius of Barclays, who happens to also serves as an executive consultant to the BBC. No doubt that the BBC’s war propaganda pledge to Bilderberg was also agreed upon during the meeting.Expect the European and North American domestic terror threat levels in both government and media to also be raised as western involvement increases in Syria – and beyond.

Turkey is moving a large number of troops and hardware to the Syrian border, according to Turkish media reports.
On Tuesday evening, the Times of Israel reported:
Large numbers of Turkish troops — including at least 15 long-range artillery pieces and tanks – moved to the Syrian frontier from the eastern city of Diyarbakir. A video published by the Turkish Cihan News Agency showed Turkish tanks being transported by carrier trucks toward the frontier.
Following the shoot-down of a Turkish warplane over Syrian territory, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his military will respond to any future incident.
“As awe-inspiring as Turkey’s friendship is, Turkey’s wrath is equally awe-inspiring,” Erdogan said in a speech delivered before parliament.

NATO chief condemns Syria over jet's downing | ||||||||||
Anders Fogh Rasmussen makes comments at special NATO summit, after Turkish PM slams Syrian government as "illegitimate".

NATO's secretary-general has called Syria's downing of a Turkish fighter jet that allegedly trespassed into Syrian airspace "unacceptable," speaking at a special meeting of NATO allies that Turkey had requested.
Speaking at the gathering in Brussels, Anders Fogh Rasmussen said: "NATO allies have expressed strong condemnation of this completely unacceptable act. He said NATO security was "indivisible", but he that the military alliance's Article 5, which calls for member states to see an attack on one country as an attack on all the alliance's members, had not been discussed.
Earlier, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's prime minister, called Syria's action a "hostile act," condeming the government of Bashar al-Assad in his weekly address to parliament.
"The United Nations and Kofi Annan gave him [Assad] a plan, but he did not take it seriously," he said.
"The Syrian regime has no more legitimacy, that is clear. Women, children, the elderly, have been killed relentlessly by this tyranny."
However, Erdogan also stated that: "Syria's borders can never prevent the brotherhood between Syria and Turkey."
Historic meeting
It is only the second time in NATO's 63-year history that it has convened under Article 4 of its charter, which provides for consultations when a member state feels its territorial integrity, political independence or security is under threat.
The only other time NATO has convened under Article 4 was in 2003 to discuss the Iraq war, again at the request of Turkey.
Turkey rejected assertions from Damascus that its forces had no option but to fire on the F-4 jet as it flew over Syrian waters close to the coast on Friday.
In a letter to the UN Security Council, Turkey condemned the "hostile act by the Syrian authorities against Turkey's national security", saying it posed "a serious threat to peace and security in the region".
The Security Council will also hold consultations on Syria at 14:00 GMT on Tuesday.
'Second attack'
Bulent Arinc, Turkey's deputy prime minister, said on Monday that Syrian troops had also opened fire on a rescue plane searching for the pilots who were shot down on Friday.
"One of our CASA planes took off with a rescue team. Unfortunately, shots from the ground targeted our plane," Arinc said during a news conference,
"Our foreign ministry and our military command notified Syrian authorities and this harrassment ceased immediately."
He added that Syria's actions "would not go unpunished".
The incident has further heightened tensions between Turkey and Syria already strained to near breaking point over the 16-month uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's rule.
European Union foreign ministers called on Monday for Turkey to show restraint, saying they would increase pressure on Assad.
"Military intervention in Syria is out of the question," Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal said.
'Act of defence'
Syria's description of the event on Monday as an act of self-defence, though tempered with commitment to a "neighbourly relationship", seemed likely to further anger Ankara.
"The plane disappeared and then reappeared in Syrian airspace, flying at 100 metres altitude and about 1-2kms from the Syrian coast," Jihad Makdissi, Syrian foreign ministry spokesman, told a Damascus news conference.
"We had to react immediately, even if the plane was Syrian we would have shot it down.
"The Syrian response was an act of defence of our sovereignty carried out by anti-aircraft machinegun which has a maximum range of 2.5 km."
Syria warned Turkey and NATO against retaliating.
"NATO is supposed to be there to strengthen countries," said Makdissi. "If their meeting is for hostile reasons [they should know that] Syrian land and waters are sacred."
The unarmed reconnaissance jet had briefly entered Syrian airspace as it approached land after patrolling the eastern Mediterranean, Arinc said, but was warned by Turkish radar controllers and immediately left and turned again out to sea.
It then made another approach to land when it was shot down 13 miles off the coast in international airspace, he said, out of the reach of Syria's anti-aircraft guns.
"According to the data in our hands, it points to our plane being shot by a laser or heat-guided surface-to-air missile," he said.

Could Syria-Turkey Conflict Pull NATO In?
Posted on 06/26/2012 by Juan
The shooting down by Syrian anti-aircraft batteries of a Turkish F-4 Phantom jet flying over international waters a few days ago has the potential to internationalize the Syrian revolution and pull in NATO.
In the absence of a United Nations Security Council resolution authorizing the use of force against the Syrian state, France and other European powers have felt hamstrung.
Russia and China are blocking a UNSC resolution, largely because they want Syria in the sphere of influence of the Shanghai Cooperation Council (Russia, the Central Asian states and China, with Iran as an observer). They don’t want it to become a NATO sphere of influence. Russia’s president Vladimir Putin and the Russian Arabists who advise him view Syria as a long-time Russian client that gives them a foothold in the eastern Mediterranean (Russia leases a naval base at Tartous from Syria).
But in the United Nations Charter, there are two grounds for war. One is self-defense. The other is a UNSC resolution designating a state as a source of disorder in the international system.
By firing on the Turkish plane (more especially in international waters), Syria has presented Turkey with a legitimate casus belli, a legal cause for war. The news that Syria actually tried to shoot down a second Turkish plane underscores this legal point. Turkey may defend itself. (For the moment, Turkey is considering non-military responses such as cutting off electricity to Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.
Here is the kicker. Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. And the NATO charter’s article 5 declares that an attack on one member is an attack on all. NATO is duty-bound to defend Turkey if it is attacked and if it asks for help. Article 4 allows a country to call for consultations among the allies if it feels its territorial integrity is threatened.
Turkey is asking for help. It is asking that NATO be convened under Article 5 for only the second time in the organization’s history.
Turkish intelligence says that it has evidence that the Syrian military knew that the plane was Turkish, referring to it as “komsu,” the Turkish word for “neighbor.”
One can only speculate at Syrian motives. But Turkey has given refuge to large numbers of Syrian dissidents in its Hatay province near to Syria. Turkey and Syria had established good relations in the last decade, but the revolution and civil war have forced Turkey to take a stand. Ankara has sided with the revolutionaries, and called for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. Qatar and Saudi Arabia are suspected of supplying the Syrian revolutionaries with rocket-propelled grenades and other war materiel that would allow them to take on the powerful Syrian military machine. Some observers believe that the RPGs and other weapons are being smuggled in from Turkey. And, such smuggling operations might need aerial support to make sure there aren’t Syrian troops along the smuggling route.
So the Syrians may have deliberately been sending Turkey a message, to back off.
It was a stupid move. As long a Syria did not engage in hostilities with other states in the region, it was teflon, since Russia and China were protecting it at the UN. But now that it has fired on a NATO plane, it has offered Turkey and its colleagues a legal way to use force.
I don’t think either Turkey or other NATO members will be at all happy to be drawn into military action in Syria. (Nor do I think that would be a good idea). But they might be drawn into creating a humanitarian corridor at Hatay in Turkey, and guarding it from Syrian attack.
By its unwise aggression against Turkey, Syria may have internationalized its civil war, something it and its allies had desperately been trying to avoid.
Moreover, if Turkey really does stop helping with electricity exports to Aleppo, that step could contribute to further discontent in one of the few major cities where protests have been muted and somewhat infrequent.

Stuxnet Attack Over as Worm Self-DestructsIran: Civilian Nuclear Program Survived Attack
by Jason Ditz, June 25, 2012
The massive Stuxnet worm attacks, which US and Israeli hackers launched against the Iranian civilian nuclear program and which eventually was attacking Siemens industrial computers across the planet, has self-destructed this morning, ending a major headache that spanned the planet.
The Stuxnet Worm was first discovered in June 2010 attacking Iranian industrial computers related to the enrichment of uranium. It damaged several centrifuges and then started attacking computers across the planet. The worm was developed by the CIA, with the help of the Department of Energy and Israeli hackers.
Though the designers didn’t have the foresight to keep the worm from attacking computers across the globe, they did apparently think to order it to self-destruct, and while the crisis isn’t entirely over (no word yet on Stuxnet variants) the worst seems to be behind everyone.
Iran’s Fars news agency was also cheering the end of Stuxnet, pointing out that the worm had failed to destroy the civilian program and that Iran is still enriching uranium for civilian purposes.
