Fukushima Diary.....

Coolant water injection system of reactor1 has a trouble / Reactor1 might lose the coolant system suddenly

One of the two coolant water injection systems has a problem in reactor1. It is assumed that the system will no longer be able to inject sufficient volume of water by 2017.

According to Tepco, they found the system can inject only 80% of water last July. They detected the system pressure has been increasing at least since October of 2012. The reason is not verified.
If the trends continues, reactor1 will not be cooled around in 2017. However because the system pressure can increase rapidly out of the trend, reactor1 may lose the coolant system before 2017 without any notice.

However the radiation dose of the operation areas for alternative lines is from a few 10 mSv/h to a few 100 mSv/h, which is too high for human workers to fix those lines.
Tepco plans to use a nitrogen gas injection system for the provisional spare coolant water injection system. The fundamental solution hasn’t been found.

Evidence to prove reactor2 also possibly exploded in 311 was found / Hole on suppression chamber

Note : Thank you for reading Fukushima Diary. Fukushima Diary is genuinely supported by your donation.

On 1/30/2014, Tepco announced there is a hole on suppression chamber of reactor2 from their simulation.

Reactor2 has been a “mystery” of 311. Some workers heard the explosive sound but no explosion was observed like other reactors. However, the building is severely contaminated and it hasn’t been known what actually happened in reactor2. The new simulation result strongly supports reactor2 also went under some explosion in 311.
(cf, [Column] (Back in 2011) Shock strong enough to shake outside of the reactor, deep enough to keep the building sound [URL])

Tepco has been attempting to measure the water level in suppression chamber of reactor2 since last September. However, because the suppression chamber was deteriorated worse than anticipated, they couldn’t obtain the credible data in the first investigation. (cf, Tepco “Suppression chamber of reactor2 is more deteriorated than expected” [URL2])

From 1/14/2014 ~ 1/16/2014, Tepco investigated the water level by ultrasonic waves again and confirmed the water level was around 5.7m from the bottom of suppression chamber. In three measurements, the water level was always 10 ~ 30mm lower than outside of suppression chamber.
From these gaps of the water level, Tepco simulated there is possibly a hole of 8~9 cm2 on the suppression chamber.

[Column] Why is contaminated water issue important ?

Note : Thank you for reading Fukushima Diary. Fukushima Diary is genuinely supported by your donation.Monthly recurring donation is also appreciated.

Fukushima Diary has been featuring the contaminated water issue since last summer and it’s been killing the web traffic of this site. Lol
However I cannot miss this issue. I’ll show you the three reasons before the pizza is delivered.

1, It increases the radiation dose of the plant area so that almost nobody can work.

The groundwater is also contaminated and it’s rising to near the surface of the ground. Tepco built the underground wall along the coastal line but it pushes the groundwater back to the land side. In some part of the seaside, workers already can’t work without the “stand” so that they don’t have to directly stand on the ground. And they also put the lead plate over the “stand”.
Also, the contaminated water tanks are extremely radioactive too. The radioactive material is packed in the tank, but when it hits water and steel, it turns to Bremsstrahlung. Workers are shot by bremsstrahlung even when they are just patrolling to find leakage.

2, The buoyancy damages the reactor buildings.

As I wrote above, the rising contaminated water harms the soundness of plant buildings. Fukushima plant is built on the artificially improved ground beside the sea. Considering it went under the earthquake and tsunami, it’s likely that the rising groundwater may be the last straw. If the reactor buildings fall down, the crippled reactors will no longer be cooled and 311 would be repeated.

3, It flows to the sea.

The final destination of the contaminated is the pacific. Now Tepco is building the underground wall along the coastal line, but the water is swerving the wall to reach the sea. Sea contamination level stays extremely high since last June. Additionally, Tepco has been concealing the significant data until IOC selects Tokyo as the host city of Olympic Games in 2020. (I’m sure it wasn’t on purpose. ) It shows high level of strontium 90 has been measured from the port seawater since last summer. Strontium 90 is known to cause leukemia.
Currently they stock 400,000 tonnes of contaminated water but they will end up discharging it to the pacific as IAEA recommends. The new type of the purification equipment has never been in the operation since early 2013. Even if it gets in the full operation, the unfilterable material remains. Tepco would keep discharging the water for the coming 60 years at the maximum level within the “safety limit”.

I was brought up with sushi. Most likely sushi will be safe in the sea around Japan. And the river will run up the mountain, sun will rise from the west.

Tepco might not have injected boric acid in

311/ Tepco “There is no record of injecting

boric acid to reactor1~3″

Note : Thank you for reading Fukushima Diary. Fukushima Diary is genuinely supported by your donation.Monthly recurring donation is also appreciated.

Tepco stated there is no record of putting boric acid to reactor1 ~ 3 when 311 took place. Boric acid is used to stop the nuclear fuel going to critical state.
It was announced in NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) commission of 1/27/2014.

Tepco described as “we couldn’t confirm the record of putting boric acid into the reactors”, but commented “we knew the boric acid was injected from the report of newspaper“.
Especially regarding reactor3, they were supposed to inject boric acid with seawater to the reactor. However they “don’t know” if the boric acid was melted, where the temperature of seawater was low. They also added “we don’t know how much boric acid was injected”.

They ended the statement to say “we don’t know if the boric acid was the stocked one in the plant or newly purchased one”.

Underground trench water of reactor2 becomes back high soon after purification

Tepco commented the radioactive density of the contaminated water retained in underground trench of reactor2 becomes back high even though they purify it.
It was announced in NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) commission of 1/27/2014.
Currently Tepco attempts to reduce the radioactive density of the water by mobile purifier. However, because the trench is possibly connected to the turbine building of reactor2, high level of contamination is supplied and the radioactive density become back again.

Tepco stated the underground trench is not leaking the high level of contaminated water to the environment but they haven’t shown any data to prove it.

Tepco is going to start drilling to install the frozen water walls between reactor2 and underground trench next week.
Highly contaminated retained water is assumed to be moving between reactor2 turbine building and underground trench, which may lead to the direct leakage of coolant water to the sea.

They plan to complete installing frozen water packers into the holes by the end of March, and start pumping up retained water from underground trench this May.

In seawater monitoring commission of NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) held of 1/27/2014, Tepco stated the installation operation is about 1 week behind because of the retained highly contaminated water.

By filling up a part of Fukushima plant port, Tepco is going to abandon 13 seawater monitoring posts.
Tepco is going not to have to report the contamination situation in the forefront.
In the press conference of 1/27/2014, they denied that they are trying to conceal the seawater contamination to comment it is because “the contamination situation were different from reactors, but it will be all the same once they complete filling up the part of the sea. They therefore don’t need to have the monitoring posts in front of every reactor.”.

They will add the new monitoring posts but it will be only 2, where they will abandon 13 posts.

Related to this article.. Highly contaminated water possibly leaking from reactor2 building to underground trench [URL]

270,000,000 Bq/m3 of Tritium was measured from groundwater taken in reactor2 seaside. This is the highest reading since November 2013.

Tepco took the sample on 1/27/2014 for the first time from this boring hole.
Regarding Cesium-134/137 density, Tepco didn’t analyze because “the turbidity was too high”.

Underground trench is running around in the seaside. It retains high level of contaminated water and it’s suspected to be connected to the turbine building. It suggests the possibility that the coolant water after directly touching the molten fuel is flowing from the turbine building to this trench.
Tepco denies that this coolant water may be traveling to reactor2 seaside through the trench, but they don’t have any specific material to logically deny the possibility.
The seaside area is getting too radioactive to continue working because of contaminated groundwater. (cf, Tepco “Seaside of the reactors is getting too radioactive to work” [URL])

Fallout level spiked in Fukushima city / Highest reading since last October

Note : Thank you for reading Fukushima Diary. Fukushima Diary is genuinely supported by your donation.

Fallout level in Fukushima city spiked up on 1/26/2014.
The reading was 48.3 MBq/km2 (Cesium-134/137), which was the highest since 10/13/2013.

The increase of fallout level was observed from January to February of 2013 too. It can be linked to the seasonal wind.

Radiation measurement instrument got contaminated because of too high level of contaminated water in Fukushima plant

Note : Thank you for reading Fukushima Diary. Fukushima Diary is genuinely supported by your donation.
Monthly recurring donation is also appreciated.

Some of the radiation measurement instruments are contaminated in Fukushima nuclear plant. NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) revealed in sea monitoring commission of 1/27/2014.

It is because they measured the contaminated water samples that are too radioactive. Since then, those instruments indicate of the presence of Cesium even without any samples.
The credibility of their measurements is quite questionable but Tepco states they can’t modify the past measurement data.

Following up this article.. Tepco concealed wrong analysis of seawater for over 6 months / Tepco “Too busy to verify” [URL]

Tepco had been concealing Strontium-90 analysis data of seawater for 6 months since last June. They state Strontium-90 density was higher than All β nuclide density, which is logically impossible. Strontium-90 density was overestimated and All β nuclide analysis was correct.

However in the working group meeting of NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) held on 1/24/2014,the committee pointed out the possibility that the Strontium-90 analysis was correct and All β nuclide analysis was underestimated. NRA added All β nuclide analysis can include larger error. Tepco had no material to deny this possibility.

If this is true, that means Tepco measured high level of Strontium-90 (350,000 Bq/m3) in seawater of Fukushima port in June. 2013 already, but they didn’t release the data when IOC selected Tokyo as host of summer Olympic games in 2020 whether it was on purpose or not.

Tepco to install another pump for contaminated groundwater of seaside of reactor2 / Manipulation of analysis ?

Following up this article.. Contamination level in seaside of reactor2 still skyrocketing / 2,700,000,000 → 3,100,000,000 Bq/m3 [URL]

Tepco is going to install a groundwater pump beside the issued boring hole. High level of All β nuclide (including Strontium-90) is measured from groundwater of this boring, and it’s rapidly increasing.
Tepco expects to reduce the contamination level by pumping up the groundwater.

However, it can be considered to be just a trick of number. Even if they pump up the contaminated groundwater just before it flows to the measurement point, the contamination itself doesn’t change.

1/27/2014, Tepco announced they are filling a part of Fukushima plant port by concrete and rubble.
They are surrounding the seaside from reactor1 to reactor4, and outside of the port by steel pipes and concrete. These are supposed to be the greater underground wall than the one inland.
Tepco is filling this part between the plant area and this greater underground wall. At the moment of 1/26/2014, they have completed injecting 27% of concrete.

The main contamination source of the sea is the water intakes of reactor1~4. They will be sealed by this reclamation. However, it can cause the overflow of contaminated groundwater in plant area. (cf, [Column] What is the real risk of Fukushima plant ? [URL])

NRA “Groundwater contamination is possibly

spreading. It can be directly leaking from

reactor1 turbine building”

Note : If you are from the international mass media, Don’t read this site before having a contact with me.

In the working group of 1/24/2014, NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) pointed out the possibility that Tritium is spreading underground of seaside of reactor1.

In two boring holes beside reactor1 turbine building, Tritium density has been increasing since last November. Tepco has no clear answer about this.
Last November, Tepco admitted the coolant water is leaking out from reactor1 vessel. (cf, [Video] Reactor1 confirmed leaking out the coolant water / 2.0 Sv/h [URL])
NRA suggested the possibility that highly contaminated water is leaking from reactor1 turbine building to underground too. This suggests the vessel coolant water is possibly leaking to the sea directly, however it hasn’t been verified since last summer.

Tepco “Seaside of the reactors is getting too

radioactive to work”

Note : If you are from the international mass media, Don’t read this site before having a contact with me.

Tepco stated the seaside of reactors are getting too radioactive for the workers to build underground wall, in the working group of NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority).

Fukushima Diary has been reporting that the radiation level is significantly increasing in the plant area because of the contaminated problem. (cf, Fukushima plant radiation increasing due to the rising contaminated groundwater / “Covering with lead plate” [URL]) Tepco is officially starting to admit the problem.

In order to stop radioactive groundwater flowing to the sea, they are building the underground wall. However between the seaside of reactor1 and 2, the radiation level is too high to continue to construction. They have to slow down the pace of construction.

Tritium is possibly flowing in the deeper

underground stream

Note : If you are from the international mass media, Don’t read this site before having a contact with me.

Tritium density is higher in the deeper ground layer of seaside of reactor1. Tepco reported it to NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) on 1/24/2014.
From Tepco’s analysis, 74,000,000 Bq/m3 of Tritium was measured from groundwater of 13m underground. This was over 4 times much as the one of 5m underground.
The samples were taken from this December to January.

Significant level of Tritium and Cesium-134/137 were measured from groundwater of 25m underground. (cf, 480,000 Bq/m3 of Tritium detected from 25m underground of Fukushima plant [URL])
The committee of the working group of NRA admitted the possibility that Tritium is flowing in the deeper layer of the ground.

Highly contaminated water possibly leaking

from reactor2 building to underground trench

Note : If you are from the international mass media, Don’t read this site before having a contact with me.

Following up this article.. 23,800,000,000 Bq/m3 of Cs-134/137 was measured from retained water in reactor2 [URL]

The highly contaminated water retained in reactor2 basement is possibly leaking to the underground trench of the seaside, NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) stated in a working group of 1/24/2014.

The underground trench is known to retain high level of contaminated water in the seaside of reactor2 and 3. Tepco has been trying to reduce the density by using the mobile purifier since last November.
However, Cesium-134/137 density of reactor2 side didn’t decrease more than by 85%, where it decreased by 96.6% in reactor3 side.
The committee of the working group pointed out the possibility that the high level of contaminated water is continuously leaking to the underground trench of seaside.

All β nuclide (including Strontium-90) density is rapidly increasing in a part of the seaside of reactor2. There is a possibility that the vessel coolant water is directly leaking to underground beside the sea.
