U.S. to keep 20,000 troops in Afghanistan: Pakistani senator

English.news.cn   2013-09-14 02:30:24

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The United States will keep approximately 20,000 U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan who will reside in nine bases in different parts of the war-torn country, a top Pakistani senator said on Friday on the conclusion of his visit to Afghanistan.
Chairman of the Pakistani Senate Committee on Defense, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, said on his return from a four-day visit that he was informed in Kabul that within the next two months, a bilateral security agreement between Kabul and Washington will be signed, allowing foreign troops to remain in Afghanistan.
Speaking at a news conference, he also said according to informed sources in Kabul, there were over 100,000 U.S. contractors who were engaged in various security and other related responsibilities for both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
"This number would not be affected by the draw-down of NATO troops," Mushahid Hussain said.
The Pakistani delegation also met Afghan president Hamid Karzai, who welcomed the results of a recent Pakistani parliamentary conference which decided to initiate dialogue with the militants.
The four-day visit of the Senate Defense Committee to Kabul has institutionalized the first-ever dialogue on defense, security and military related issues between the two neighbors.
The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to institutionalize the dialogue, the next round of which will be convened in Islamabad after the Afghanistan presidential elections in April 2014.

Cyrenaica federalists deny agreement to reopen oil terminals

By Libya Herald Staff.
Tripoli, 16 September 2013:
The Cyrenaica Political Bureau has reportedly denied that it had reached an agreement with the government to reopen the oil terminals in eastern Libya. A spokesman for the group, Osama Oraibi, is quoted by the Libya Channel news service as saying that the statement put out in the bureau’s name was fake. “The bureau did not negotiate with any state officials, whether from the government or from the Congress.”
The Political Bureau, headed by Ibrahim Jadhran, is the executive office of the self-proclaimed Cyrenaica Transitional Council. There were widespread reports over the weekend of the supposed agreement.
Meanwhile, Cyrenaica federalists have called for demonstrations in Benghazi and elsewhere in the region today, the 82nd anniversary of the hanging on Omar Mukhtar, to protest what they call the “rampant corruption in the body of the sagging state” and “the new dictatorship” which they claim includes the Dar Al Fatwa, the Muslim Brotherhood and the National Forces Alliance of Mahmoud Jibril, and against terror attacks and the lack of security in eastern Libya.

GNC sitting disrupted by protestors

By Ahmed Elumami.
Tripoli, 15 September 2013:
Protestors from the Brigade of Liberation are staging angry protests outside the General National Congress (GNC) today, in a dispute over wages.
The protestors, who say they are members of the Brigade of Liberation, claim they haven’t been paid for 18 months. They amassed outside the GNC shortly after midday and had heated discussions with GNC security personnel, during which several warning gunshots were fired into the air.
“How can I raise my children without a salary? The government should do something quickly,” one protestor told the Libya Herald. “I’m not going to leave until Nuri Abu Sahmain solves the problem.” Another one said that the Brigade numbered 7,000 and that they were all on their way to Tripoli.
However, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, Abdulrazaq Mohammed Al-Shebahe, told the Libya Herald that it was a paperwork problem. “These people need to officially join the brigade and fill out applications about themselves,” he said, “because we need to know exactly who these 7,000 members of the Brigade of Liberation actually are.”
The protest completely disrupted this morning’s GNC sitting, with security eventually closing the gates.
