[Column] Summary of Fukushima situation – Why is groundwater the problem ?

International media came back to Fukushima. It’s because of the sea contamination issue. Like I explained before, the main source of sea contamination is the groundwater. Why they can’t stop it and what are they doing ? I would like to explain before the next bus comes.

1. What makes groundwater the problem ?
Since before they built Fukushima nuclear plant, tones of groundwater went through the potential plant area to the sea. Now everything that touched Fukushima plant gets contaminated. Groundwater is not the exception.

2. How are they treating it ?
A part of the groundwater flows into the plant buildings. It is collected and kept in the tanks, everyday. The rest of water is flowing to the sea. Some of it is stopped by the wall, but because it nearly caused flooding in the plant area, now it’s pumped up and stocked in the tanks too. This is why Tepco needs the infinite amount of the tanks.

3. Is there any way to stop it ?
The answer is No. There is no technology. Now Tepco is planning three countermeasures. One is to pump up the water upstream before contaminated, they say and the second is to freeze water before contaminated, they say. The third is to purify the stocked water to discharge to the sea.
However the first one would gather more groundwater, so it’s meaningless. The second one has never been tested for the feasibility. About the third one, the purifying facilities got disordered in the test operation for unknown reason.

I don’t want you to be angry at me saying this. This is the reality whoever explains it.

56,000,000,000 Bq/m3 of Cs-134/137 from the retained water of reactor3

According to Tepco, extremely high level of Cesium-134/137 is still measured in the retained water of reactor3 building.
The reality is the state of reactor3 is still unknown though it’s been 2.5 years since 311.
The retained water is assumed to be the mixture of the coolant water and the groundwater.
The sampling date was 8/22/2013. Cs-134 level was 17,000,000,000 Bq/m3. Cs-137 level was 39,000,000,000 Bq/m3.
From the sample taken on 2/14/2013, Ce-134 density was 24,000,000,000 Bq/m3. Cs-137 density was 45,000,000,000 Bq/m3.
Even though 6 months have passed, Cs-134/137 density is still in the high level.

Tritium and Sr-90 detected outside of Fukushima nuclear plant port

According to Tepco, Tritium and Strontium-90 were detected in the outside of Fukushima nuclear plant port.
The sampling date was 7/15/2013. The analysis result hasn’t been published for over a month.
The readings are 5,500 Bq/m3 of Tritium and 1,200 Bq/m3 of Strontium-90.
These were detected in the north side of reactor5&6 water outlet.
From the sampling of 8/19/2013, all β nuclides (including Sr-90) was lower than the detectable amount. Tritium density was 4,700 Bq/m3 on 8/12/2013.
The radiation level in the seawater is increasing regardless of the impervious walls, and apparently it’s spreading out of the port.

According to Tepco, radioactive silver Ag-110m (half-life 250days) was detected from 8 of 8 crab samples. The crab is Ovalipes unctatus. The highest reading was 9.0 Bq/Kg.
The sampling place was 20km radius area around Fukushima nuclear plant port. The sampling dates were from this April to May.
Though the boiling point of Ag-110m is 2,164℃, it’s still detected in the gas of reactor1 and 3.

Ag-110m is spreading to the sea and taken by marine creatures.

[300m3 leakage] Did the leakage really stop ? / All β density jumped up 6 times much in the near drain

About the 300m3 leakage of contaminated water, the main nuclides density in the leaked water – All β are increasing in the near drain according to Tepco though the leakage was supposed to stop.
It was 86,000 Bq/m3 on 8/26/2013. It became 210,000 Bq/m3 on 8/28/2013 and it reached490,000 Bq/m3 on 8/29/2013.
The drain is connected to the sea. The measurement point is in the South of the leaking tank, where is the opposite side of where the leaked water flowed.

Cs-134/137 level in the groundwater of the seaside of reactor2 increased 6 times much as 10 days before

According to Tepco, Cesium-134/137 density in the groundwater marked the highest in seaside of reactor2.
The sample was taken from one of the borings in the area surrounded by the impervious walls.
Cs-134 density was 13,000 Bq/m3, Cs-137 density was 31,000 Bq/m3.
The past highest readings were 3,200 Bq/m3 of Cs-134 and 4,300 Bq/m3 of Cs-137 measured on 8/19/2013.
The main nuclide in the groundwater used to be Tritium. It is not known why Cs-134/137 density is increasing.

[Column] Summary of Fukushima situation – The difference among contaminated water, groundwater and sea contamination

The contaminated water situation is getting increasingly complicated. I think some people are too busy to follow up. Here I’d like to summarize the situation short so you can read it before the next metro station.
■ The difference among contaminated water, groundwater and sea contamination.
1. Contaminated water
Contaminated water comes from the coolant water because the buildings are crippled. It’s retained in the building, tanks, and the trenches underground. It keeps increasing and Tepco is building the storage tanks in a hurry. Some of the tanks had leakage recently.
2. Groundwater
Groundwater becomes contaminated groundwater when it comes close to the plant buildings. This is the main cause of the sea contamination. Tepco is also stocking this in the tanks. It’s less contaminated than (1) but the volume is huge. It’s overflowing to the sea, flowing into the plant buildings to overwhelm the storage capacity, and also coming up to the ground surface near the seaside. (It doesn’t “leak” because it’s outside from the beginning)
3. Sea contamination
Sea contamination is mostly caused by the contaminated groundwater. To know the actual sea contamination situation, they need to take samples near the sea surface, bottom of the sea, and in the middle, inside of the plant port and outside, also offshore the plant. However currently the sea contamination is not entirely researched.

What Must Be Done To Save Fukushima & The Pacific

What Must Be Done To Save Fukushima & The Pacific
Since the admission by TEPCO that the plant has been leaking for the last 2+ years and that it continues to leak, there has been much international concern. Daiichi has massive amounts of groundwater passing through the plant grounds every day. The ground water is seeping into the reactor buildings and is becoming contamination with radioactive contamination. This is something no other nuclear site has had to deal with related to contamination or a meltdown. … Read entire article »

TEPCO Sends Unit 4 Into Space

TEPCO Sends Unit 4 Into Space
TEPCO’s photoshop department is at it again. This photo appeared in a report on the progress and inspections of unit 4. For some unknown reason they decided this older photo of unit 4 contained super secret information at the ground level. The poorly done image gives the appearance of the building floating in space. Possibly TEPCO’s next solution for the disaster … Read entire article »

How Fukushima Leaks

The mainstream media, late to the game has confused the leaking at Fukushima. Some reported as it if has not actually happened yet. Here are the ways Fukushima Daiichi leaks. 1. Constant leaks The ancient underground river that flows beneath the plant is assumed to move 1000 tons of water under the plant and most of it out to sea every day. TEPCO pulls 400 tons of that out of the reactor buildings daily as it mixes with the contaminated water in the buildings. The remaining 600 tons is assumed to flow out to sea each day with some of it becoming contaminated. Marine scientists have cited these types of ongoing leaks as the reason cesium levels … Read entire article »

Fatal Flaws In Fukushima Radioactive Water Tanks Found

TEPCO has given out more information about the design of 300+ tanks being used on site to hold highly radioactive waste water. They earlier admitted the tanks has been assembled then reassembled elsewhere after the ground beneath them subsided. This is thought to have distorted the bolt together sections and gaskets on the tanks causing the leaks. In the released photos they show that the bottom of these tanks are not one solid piece but are sections bolted (or riveted) together with gaskets on the interior of the tank. TEPCO admitted months ago that the exterior bolts of these tanks were working loose causing small tank leaks. Workers re tightened bolts on the tank exteriors to … Read entire article »
