Tepco started isolating the seaside of reactor2 by underground walls
Posted by Mochizuki on August 16th, 2013
Tepco started building the underground wall to surround the seaside of reactor2. The groundwater level is rising due to the impervious wall and Tepco is trying to pump up the water. Since 8/13/2013, Tepco has been building additional underground wall on the land side of the area, where is between the reactor2 turbine building and [...]

According to Tepco, power cable trench on the seaside of reactor3 and 4 were found empty from 5 locations at the moment of 8/13/2013.
The trench is located on the east side of reactor3 and 4. They assumed the facility still retained the contaminated water.
In the press conference of 8/14/2013, Tepco’s spokesman stated the contaminated water have possibly gone underground through the cracks and the spaces between the parts made by the quakes.

Contaminated groundwater possibly being exchanged with seawater in seawater trench of reactor1 too

According to Tepco, high level of chloride concentration was detected from the seawater trench of reactor1 too.
The sampling date was 8/14/2013. The chloride concentration was 19,500 ppm.
They also measured 3,800,000 Bq/m3 of Cs-134 and 7,800,000 Bq/m3 of Cs-137 from retained water.
It was the shaft B of the seawater trench for reactor1. From the high level of chloride concentration, it is assumed the retained water is possibly being exchanged with seawater as well.

Well point got in operation to pump up groundwater / laid on vinyl sheet and sandbag, plywood boards

In order to reduce the increasing groundwater on the seaside of reactor 2, Tepco installed a well point and got it into the operation.
They plan to install 27 more well points.
Tepco expects the well points to pump up the water faster than the first pump, but from the photos, the equipment is laid on the vinyl sheet with sandbags. Pipes are fixed with the plywood boards.
