The Free Syrian Army is demanding an al-Qaeda-linked group hand over the man it blames for killing one of its top commanders.
Kamal Hamami, known as Abu Basir, was killed at a checkpoint in Latakia province on Thursday.
The incident has increased tensions between fighters who are supposed to be working together to take on the forces of President Bashar al-Assad.
Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr spoke to an FSA commander in the area who witnessed the killing.

Syrian rebels have a new source of weapons and cash from inside Kuwait, and their benefactors in the oil-rich state are sending the aid to the most militant and anti-West factions involved in the fight to topple Bashar al-Assad.
The role of Saudi and Qatari governments and individuals in the funding and arming of Islamist fighters in Syria has been well known since the civil war began more than two years ago. But now, guns and money are flowing from private sources and Salafist-controlled NGOs based in Kuwait, and they are going to rebel factions aligned with Al Qaeda.
“We are collecting money to buy all these weapons, so that our brothers will be victorious,” hard-core Sunni Islamist Sheikh Shafi’ Al-Ajami announced on Kuwaiti television last month, listing the black-market prices of weapons, including heat-seeking missiles, anti-aircraft guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

US officials exposed Israel's challenge to Russia, Syria, Iran and Hizballah when they named the Israeli Air Force Saturday, July 13 as responsible for the air strikes against the big Syria arms depot in Latakia eight days ago. DEBKAfile: Russian-supplied Yakhont anti-ship missiles were destroyed in the explosions, and the Syrian-Hizballah Aleppo offensive was delayed by the loss of the arsenal accumulated for the attack. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Bashar Assad, Hizballah and Tehran had all earlier threatened reprisals if Israel attacked Syria again.
