 Newtown School Closed After Threat
Dianna Russini, NBC Connecticut

Head O’Meadow School, an elementary school in Newtown, is closed after the school received a threat on Tuesday, according to the superintendent.
Public schools in Newtown were scheduled to open two hours late, so no students were at school when the threat was received.
School officials said police had predicted that there might be some threats and there was one.
All staff members are safe, school officials said. Police were at the scene as a precaution before the threat was made.
The threat was made on the day that Newtown public schools returned to school after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday.
No additional information has been released on what the threat was.

Gunman shoots 1 in Texas movie theater parking lot

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Sheriff's officials say a man opened fire in a San Antonio movie theater parking lot, wounding one person before an officer shot him inside the theater.
Bexar (bayr) County sheriff's spokesman Louis Antu says the incident started about 9:30 p.m. Sunday when the man fired shots inside a nearby restaurant. It's not clear what led to the shooting.
Antu says the man headed toward the theater and shot a male in the lot. The age and condition of the victim wasn't immediately known, but Antu says his injuries did not appear life-threatening.
The gunman entered the theater. Antu says the man fired a shot but struck no one. An off-duty sheriff's deputy working security then shot the gunman.
The suspect was taken to a hospital and not immediately charged.

Man Arrested With 47 Guns After Threatening Elementary School In Indiana

A man in Indiana has been arrested with 47 guns in Indiana after he allegedly made a threat to a local elementary school.
According to News 9, Cedar Lake Police arrested 60-year-old Von I. Meyer early on Friday morning after he threatened to light his wife on fire. Police said that Meyer was also threatening to shoot up Jane Ball Elementary School.
Meyer allegedly said that he wanted to “kill as many people as he could.”
Wish TV reports that police arrested Meyer with 47 guns and ammunition at his home. Police estimated that the total price of his arsenal was over $100,000.

Meyer was charged with “felony intimidation” on Sunday.
It’s unclear how police found out about Meyer’s alleged plan to shoot up Jane Ball Elementary School but it’s easy to see why the world is being extra cautious about school shootings. A few days ago, a 20-year-old man shot and killed 26 people at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. The majority of the victims during that incident were under the age of 7-years-old.
CBS News reports that officials are worried that the man in Indiana isn’t the only one who may try to imitate the school shooting in Connecticut. Officials are worried about the Werther Effect, a “copy-cat mechanism and they say their studies show it’s particularly powerful on adolescents.”
Meyer didn’t get the chance to follow through on his threat but there have been other deadly shootings this week in addition to the Newtown, Conn. school shooting. There have also been shootings at malls in Oregon and California.

Man fires 50 shots at Calif. mall parking lot, sending crowds running for cover — then 'just gives up'; no one hurt

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — A suspect who fired about 50 shots in the parking lot of a crowded Southern California shopping mall, sending shoppers sprinting for safety, was cooperative when officers took him into custody, authorities said Sunday.

Witnesses said people ran, screaming and ducking for cover, when 42-year-old Marcos Gurrola fired into the air and onto the ground Saturday afternoon near the Macy's department store at the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach.

AP
Suspect Marcos Gurrola gave up without a fight after causing mall panic.
He paused to reload several times, police said.
Then Gurrola put the gun down and offered no resistance when bicycle officers arrested him around 4:30 p.m., said Lt. John Lewis.
"He just gave up," Lewis said.
Investigators have no motive, Lewis said.
Gurrola, of Garden Grove, was charged with shooting at an inhabited dwelling. He was being held Sunday on $250,000 bail. Police recovered a handgun and ammunition.
Officials said one person suffered a minor injury while running away, and was treated at the scene.
The gunfire caused panic, coming a day after a gunman killed 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school, and days after a deadly mall shooting in Oregon.
The mall, near Pacific Coast Highway in the heart of Newport Beach, was crowded with holiday shoppers and the parking lot was full. Many people ran into stores, a movie theater and other businesses.

"It's a miracle nobody got injured," said Sven Maric, who said he was celebrating his wife's birthday at a restaurant patio about 50 yards away. "The bullets had to land somewhere, and he shot so many."
Some stores voluntarily closed their doors and kept shoppers inside while police investigated.
Bret McGaughey, 22, of Laguna Beach, said he was with his mom in the Apple store when shoppers ran to the rear of the store as employees locked the front entrance. He estimated that up to 100 people stayed in the back of the store for about 30 minutes until Apple employees announced that police said it was safe to reopen the doors.
Gurrola is a licensed security guard whose firearm permit expired in 2001, according to the Orange County Register, which cited state records.
Gurrola doesn't appear to have a criminal record, the newspaper said.
A telephone number for a Marcos Gurrola was disconnected.
On Tuesday, a gunman at an Oregon shopping mall killed two people and wounded a third amid a holiday crowd estimated at 10,000 people. Clackamas County authorities are still trying to determine why the gunman opened fire before killing himself.
