Assumption Parish and Texas Brine Co. officials issued estimates Wednesday that disagree on how much land a 5.5-acre sinkhole swallowed during the slurry hole’s eastern-bank collapse Tuesday.Parish officials offered an estimate Wednesday nearly 19 times the size of their initial estimate on Tuesday [...] to almost as much as 0.7 acre, or 30,000 square feet. [...]John Boudreaux, director of the parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said measurements calculated on Wednesday comparing current and prior maps showed the area of collapse extends 300 feet along the sinkhole’s bank and extends 75 to 100 feet inland on the eastern rim.Boudreaux’s original estimate issued less than an hour after the Tuesday event suggested a strip of land 80 feet by 20 feet had fallen into the sinkhole.Sonny Cranch, Texas Brine spokesman, said Wednesday that the company estimates about [...] an area possibly as small as 750 square feet. ASCENSION PARISH,LA (NBC33) — Imagine going to grab a glass of water only to find out what’s brewing inside the cup could burst into flames.
“If I can light the water in my faucet something is wrong,” said Napoleonville resident Ronald Pate.
Pate lives four miles away from a giant sinkhole in Bayou Corne. He says ever since the hole formed he’s noticed something extra in the water.
“I noticed more bubbles in the water,” said Pate. “I mean it wasn’t like that before.”
Pate’s water comes from a private well on his property. He says after heard about what happened in Bayou Corne, he called in the Department of Environmental Quality to help figure out what’s going on. The DEQ checked inside Pate’s water shed and found increased levels of methane gas. . . .

It has been reported that a large slough in just occurred at the sinkhole site. The size is estimated to be a 20′ by 80′ section located on the east side of the sinkhole. No additional details are available at this time.

BAYOU CORNE — A growing, 5.5-acre sinkhole in northern Assumption Parish swamps gobbled up an another strip of land Tuesday, parish officials said.
The 80-by-20-foot section on the eastern side of the sinkhole fell in, or sloughed off, about 4:45 p.m., parish officials said.
John Boudreaux, director of the parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said trees fell in with the collapse, but no one was injured.
He said the collapsed area extended from a mat road that Texas Brine Co. of Houston has installed to clean trees, other vegetative matter and oil out the sinkhole to a point 80 feet north or the road.
The sinkhole is located between Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou South of La. 70 South. Its discovery on Aug. 3 led to a mandatory evacuation of 150 homes in the area that remains in place.
Believed to have been caused by a failed Texas Brine salt cavern in the nearby Napoleonville Dome, the sinkhole’s surface area has kept enlarging as land around its rim crumbles into the slurry-filled hole.
These collapses are expected, scientists and Texas Brine officials have said, as the banks along the inside of the 449-foot deep hole find a stable slope.
Boudreaux said the collapse Tuesday was one of the largest single sloughing events seen to date.

“Cut Through” Next to Sinkhole Completely Full of Water
The new PHOTOS from the parish have several pictures showing the “cut through”many have mentioned on YouTube. Many think it is an access path made by workers to get to the area.
But now it is clearly full of water from the sinkhole.
