Western Officials Slam Syria After Deadly Bombing
Diplomats Fault Syrian Govt for Getting Itself Bombed
by Jason Ditz, May 10, 2012
A massive bombing tears through the capital city of a major nation, destroying a massive government building and killing scores of innocent civilians nearby. Hundreds of others are wounded, some gravely.

State Dept. Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland
Virtually anywhere else on the planet, such a bombing would create a wellspring of sympathy for the attacked nation. Today, in Syria, it was anything but, as Western officials issued the obligatory statements condemning the attacks, and spent most of their time condemning the regime.
“As Kofi Annan made clear to the UN Security Council earlier this week, the onus is on the Syrian authorities to implement a full ceasefire,” insisted British Foreign Secretary William Hague, while the US State Department started its own statement by calling the bombing “unjustifiable” and went on to praise the “legitimate Syrian opposition” while saying that the Syrian government had “created the conditions” to get itself bombed.
The State Department went on to hint that they were considering going to the UN Security Council for “further action” against the Assad regime. French officials, who have been pushing for an invasion of Syria, also insisted that the regime “bears all the responsibility” for the bombing.

Hizballah rushes arms to Syria, Iran sets up security cameras in Damascus
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report May 11, 2012, 7:44 PM (GMT+02:00)

The shocking impact of the twin explosions which killed 55 people and injured almost 400 in Damascus Thursday, May 10, galvanized Bashar Assad’s allies, starting with Iran, into frenetic activity. Within hours, Tehran had ordered its Lebanese proxy Hizballah to open up its arms stores and run quantities of weapons and military equipment across the border to the Syrian army – a striking reversal of the routine direction of arms supplies. Thursday night, Washington quietly asked Lebanese President Michel Suleiman to put a stop to the traffic.
While the Syrian opposition and Assad regime blamed each other – or al Qaeda - for the worst attack Damascus has seen in the 14-month uprising, it was obvious to both that it must have been the work of a major and very professional undercover agency.
In Tehran, Moscow and Beirut, the scale of the bombing attacks which leveled a key Syrian security headquarters was judged a sharp escalation in the offensive for President Assad’s overthrow - more intense even than the NATO campaign which last year removed the Libyan ruler Muammar Qaddafi.
DEBKAfile’s sources in Moscow say the event has consequently cast a dark shadow over relations between the Obama administration and Vladimir Putin at the outset of his third term as Russian president.
This week, Putin pointedly declined to attend the G-8 summit of world leaders meeting next week at the US presidential retreat of Camp David. He decided to send Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev over in his place.
The Russian president has three large bones to pick with Washington: a) He suspects American hands of stirring up opposition demonstrations against him during his election campaign; b) He is flat against the US missile shield going up in Europe and the Middle East to intercept Iran’s ballistic missiles; and c) He is solidly behind the Assad regime which he accuses the US of seeking to overthrow.
In its message to Beirut, the US reminded the Lebanese president that the transfer of war materials by Hizballah to Syria was a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 which ended the 206 Lebanon war between the Lebanese Shiite terrorist group and Israel. Arms transfers between Syria and Lebanon were banned in both directions. But his prohibition was never upheld. Regular arms consignments have been crossing into Lebanon for Hizballah from and via Syria for the past six years without any interference by the United Nations force UNIFIL stationed in South Lebanon.

Washington knows perfectly well that no one in Lebanon will stop the arms flow to Syria either. But the request to President Suleiman is intended to lay the ground for expanded international and US intervention in the Syrian conflict.
Another step Tehran took straight after the Damascus bombings to firm up the Assad regime was to start organizing a network of closed circuit security cameras to be installed in all parts of Damascus and its exits and entries for three functions:
1. Opponents of the regime will have less freedom of movement in the capital;
2. The army and security forces can economize on manpower for securing the city. Patrols will fan out after cameras register hostile or suspicion movements.
3. Syrian and allied intelligence services can keep track of UN monitors’ movements. The UN mission is regarded by Syria, Iran and Russia as “the eyes and ears of the West.”

Drawing Inspiration From Hitler, UK Threatens To Arrest Thought Criminals Before Olympics
London 2012 is about the politics of fear

Following the footsteps of Adolf Hitler, who had undesirables and political enemies rounded up and imprisoned before the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the British government is threatening jail time for protesters violating banning orders preventing them from coming close to any Olympic venue.
“The UK government is rounding on protesters ahead of this summer’s Olympics, issuing the first court order to ban an Occupy activist from the event. The unprecedented security measures for the Games have been branded as over-the-top,” reports RT.
One such banning order was handed out to 29 year-old Simon Moore, who committed the egregious act of protesting against a practice basketball court being built near the Olympic park in East London. He faces a 5-year jail sentence if he ventures “within 100 yards of Olympic venues, homes of participants, officials or spectators and the route of the Olympic torch.”
“I think it’s insane. I think it shows the prevailing state of consciousness in our governments and the world, which is one of fear – fear and control,” Moore told RT’s Laura Smith.
In rounding up potential troublemakers ahead of the games, the British government is drawing inspiration from none other than Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
In an effort to “clean up” Berlin before the 1936 Olympics, the German Ministry of Interior authorized the chief of the Berlin Police to arrest all undesirables – mainly Gypsies – prior to the Games and have them slung in detention camps. Political enemies were also incarcerated in the camps.
Hitler also used the event to install an early form of CCTV surveillance, but nothing to rival Big Brother’s stranglehold over London which will be put to good use in spotting thought crimes before they happen.
In addition, as Tom Chivers notes, the Olympic torch procession was in fact invented by the Nazis and has nothing to do with ancient Greece. The notorious Olympic rings signal wasalso created by the Nazis.
Just as in 1936, when the torch procession was met with protests “which were put down with traditional brutality by quaint local security services,” anyone attempting to use the 2012 procession to draw attention to their cause will be similarly treated.
The Olympic games represent little more than an opportunity for the government to showcase its arsenal of draconian technology and stifling security measures which are justified by the threat of terrorism yet in reality are aimed at generating compliance and advancing the police state.
We’re already seeing surface to air missiles placed on top of apartment buildings to ward off Al-Qaeda’s imaginary air force, as well as radiation-firing naked body scanners being put in place for Olympic events.
London 2012 has next to nothing to do with sport and everything to do with the politics of fear – so it’s little surprise that the security preparations surrounding the event are all borrowed from the Nazi template.

Air Force Document: Drones Can Be Used To Spy On Americans
“Incidental” surveillance data can be held for 90 days

A newly discovered Air Force intelligence brief states that should fleets of unmanned drones accidentally capture surveillance footage of Americans, the data can be stored and analyzed by the Pentagon for up to 90 days.
The instruction, dated April 23, admits that the Air Force cannot legally conduct “nonconsensual surveillance” on Americans, but also states that should the drones”incidentally” capture data while conducting other missions, military intelligence has the right to study it to determine whether the subjects are legitimate targets of domestic surveillance.
“Collected imagery may incidentally include US persons or private property without consent,” the instruction states.
The Air Force can take advantage of “a period not to exceed 90 days” to use the data to assess “whether that information may be collected under the provisions of Procedure 2, DoD 5240.1-R and permanently retained under the provisions of Procedure 3, DoD 5240.1-R.” it continues.
The Pentagon directives cited authorize limited domestic spying in certain scenarios such as natural disasters, environmental cases, and monitoring activity around military bases.
Should the drones capture data on Americans, the Air Force says that it should determine whether they are, among other things, “persons or organizations reasonably believed to be engaged or about to engage, in international terrorist or international narcotics activities.”
