The companies were not exclusively involved in the oil industry, and the sanctions also included moves against companies believed to be linked to general international shipping. Treasury Department official David Cohen said the moves would foil “deceptive efforts” by Iran to sell oil to other countries.
Nawaf Fares, Syria’s ambassador to Iraq, has followed Syrian general Manaf Tlass and defected from the regime. Fares has given lip service to the opposition and urged Syrians still in the military to turn their weapons “ towards the criminals in the regime.”
Daqduq was finally released from prison after his most recent acquittal, which came after the court found no real evidence that he did what US forces accused him of, but is still being held under house arrest inside the Green Zone. The US confirmed it will press Iraq to continue holding him in this manner despite the acquittals.

Syria takes WMD out of storage: US: Situation incredibly dangerous
DEBKAfile Special Report July 13, 2012, 10:36 AM (GMT+02:00)

As part of its ongoing war maneuver, Syria Thursday, July 12, this week drilled the firing of advanced Scud D ballistic missiles capable of carrying chemical weapons and nerve gas – a clear message from Bashar Assad that weapons of mass destruction are now in play to save his regime.
American officials, alarmed by the movement out of storage of parts of his vast arsenal of sarin nerve agent, mustard gas and cyanide, warned it could escalate the Syrian conflict and expand it to other parts of the region. "This could set the precedent of WMD [weapons of mass destruction] being used under our watch," one U.S. official said. "This is incredibly dangerous to our national security." The Obama administration has begun to hold classified briefings about the new intelligence.
DEBKAfile’s military sources say that two developments drove the Syrian president Bashar Assad to this extreme threat:
1. The rebels were discovered to have procured roadside bombs capable of crippling the T-72 tank units he has just tried injecting into the battle for the first time this week. Tanks sent in long convoys into Aleppo and the suburbs of Damascus were blown up.
2. The balance of war has reached the point that the government controls only those parts of the country where heavy military or security forces contingents with massive fire power are deployed; elsewhere, the rebels have the upper hand.
In the course of its war exercise, the Syrians fired a selection of ground-to-ground missiles which they described as capable of “hitting targets deep within enemy territory.” Our military sources say all the Scuds, the M-600, Fateh-110 and Zelzal can reach any point in Israel. They also tested upgraded C-802 shore-to-ship rockets.
American officials revealed Thursday in Washington that “Syria has begun moving parts of its vast arsenal of chemical weapons out of storage facilities.” They didn’t say to where they were moved.
DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the missile warheads and shells containing poisonous weapons such as sarin, mustard gas and cyanide are being moved to specific Syrian units ahead of field operations. Some US officials are quoted by The Wall Street Journal as fearing “Damascus intends to use the weapons against the rebels or civilians, potentially as part of a targeted ethnic cleansing campaign.” Others hope it is a feint to inspire fear. Whatever the case, the alarmed US official said in Washington: This could set the precedent of WMD [weapons of mass destruction] being used under our watch" and is "incredibly dangerous to our national security."

False Flag Alert: US Claims Syria “Moving Nerve Gas Out of Storage”

Citing no evidence, and on the heels of yet another baseless “activist” report claiming a massacre has taken place in Homs, nameless US officials claimed to the Wall Street Journal that the Syrian government is taking chemical weapons out of storage for possible use “against anti-regime rebels or civilians, possibly in an ethnic cleansing campaign.”
Despite claiming to possess this information, the US officials refused to disclose the location these weapons were being moved to, nor the actual nomenclature of the weapons, stating only “they are most worried about Syria’s stockpiles of sarin gas.”

Image: The symbols for nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. ….
In mid-June, Russia Today had warned of a possible false-flag attack by NATO-backed militantsoperating under the cover of the so-called “Free Syrian Army” employing chemical weapons pilfered from devastated, militant-overrun Libya. The aim of the operation would be to create a justifiable impetus for overt Western military intervention, citing the use of chemical weapons against civilian populations as the most extreme attempt yet to manufacture otherwise nonexistent consensus for a repeat of NATO’s operations in Libya.
In, “WARNING: Possible NATO-FSA False Flag Attack in Syria,” it was explained how NATO’s militant proxies possessed not only the means and capabilities of carrying out such an attack, but the motivation and precedents of doing so – with the FSA already admittedly carrying out a deadly, nationwide terrorist bombing campaign killing scores of civilians per attack. The dissemination of Libyan weapons into the hands of militants operating in Syria has also been confirmed by governments and international media on numerous occasions, as has the fact that Libyan militants themselves (and here) have joined NATO’s covert operations to overthrow the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
The Syrian government has withstood over a year of withering, brutal attacks, economically, politically, diplomatically, throughout the Western controlled corporate media, and militarily by the West. One might then be troubled to fathom why the government would then use chemical weapons sure to provide the impetus needed to leap over the obstructions placed in the West’s way throughout the UN Security Council by Russia and China. The answer is simple, the Syrian government is not pondering the use of chemical weapons, NATO and its terrorist proxies are.
This, along with a recent roll-out of preplanned, over-hyped “defections” seeks to psychologically stampede the Syrian government from power, and if necessary, create a pretext to do so militarily.

US Announces More Iran Sanctions, Sparking War Fears
Oil Prices Spike, Israel Demands Even More Hostile Actions
by Jason Ditz, July 12, 2012
The Obama Administration has announced yet another new round of sanctions against Iran today, targeting several companies that it believes are “front organizations” helping Iran to continue shipping oil abroad.
The move had a negative effect on financial markets, with analysts saying that they added to concerns that the ever growing array of US sanctions were building up to a full-scale war. Oil prices likewise spiked on the news, fearing it would threaten international supply.
All this appeared insufficient from the position of Israeli hawks, as Vice Premier Moshe Ya’alon demanded that the US “show it is serious” by making even harsher statements and imposing even more sanctions in the lead-up to the next round of talks.

Syrian Opposition Skeptical of Recent Defections
Kofi Annan continues to press world powers to stop trying to exploit the Syrian crisis and follow his plan
by John Glaser, July 12, 2012
Two high-profile defections from the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad have reignited US calls for Assad to step down, as Russia continues to block international efforts that leave open the possibility of military intervention.
But members of the opposition are skeptical. ”I know this man is a criminal,” said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition outlet which has tried to tally the death toll throughout the conflict.
“It’s quite similar to the Manaf Tlass story. If the ambassador defects, he does it because he is greedy for power because Western intelligence agencies are looking for figures who can fit into a transitional phase,” Abdel Rahman told AFP.
Another opposition activist based in Hama, who identified himself as Abu Ghazi, told AFP that, “People are very wary of the reasons he has defected.”
“This defection could be part of a scenario at a time when Russia is starting to slightly shift in its position, and while the international community and the regime are searching for ways to establish a transitional government,” Abu Ghazi added.
Meanwhile, UN envoy Kofi Annan continues to try to move a process forward for a political transition in Syria by pressuring foreign powers like the US and Russia to give up trying to exploit the crisis for their own interests and pressure either side in Syria to cooperate with the ceasefire and political transition.
But Russia said on Thursday it would veto a Western-backed UN Security Council draft resolution threatening sanctions on Syria and leaving room for military action if the regime does not comply with Annan’s plan in within 10 days.
“As a whole, their resolution is unbalanced and foresees that obligations should only be fulfilled by the Syrian government. Practically nothing is said about the obligations of the opposition,” Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said.

Iraq Rejects US Demand to Recharge Acquitted ‘Hezbollah Commander’
US Promises to Appeal Latest Not Guilty Verdict
by Jason Ditz, July 12, 2012
The White House is pressing Iraq to once again “review” the case against Ali Mussa Daqduq, an accused Hezbollah commander who has twice been found not guilty in Iraqi courts on charges that he was involved in a 2007 attack on US forces. Iraq’s high court suggests this won’t be happening, however, terming their latest decision final and saying Daqduq isn’t facing any future charges.
Lost in the US demands to keep holding Daqduq is the question of whether or not he is actually guilty. The US is taking that as a given, citing a confession gained after weeks of intense interrogations. Yet even Iraq’s courts, not exactly known for their fairness, don’t seem to be able to convict him.
This has led to speculation that the US will request Daqduq’s extradition to the US to face the exact same charges. Complicating this effort is that the US has no intention of actually charging him with that crime or bringing him into a court, they don’t have they evidence either. Instead, they would seek his extradition so he could be jailed indefinitely as a “suspect.” Iraqi officials say they have not received any extradition requests.

Mullah Omar can run for president:Karzai

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai called Thursday on Taliban supreme leader Mullah Omar to give up fighting his US-backed government in return for the chance to run for president of the war-torn nation.
Mullah Omar, the one-eyed Taliban leader who has been on run since the United States toppled his regime in late 2001, is one of the world's most wanted men and is leading a Taliban insurgency aimed at ousting Karzai.
Karzai has repeatedly called on Omar and other insurgents fighting against
his administration to renounce violence and accept peaceful reintegration.
"I repeat my call on all Afghans, those who aren't the puppets of others and have (only) issues with us at home -- they're welcome for any talks," he told a news conference.
"Mullah Mohammad Omar can come inside Afghanistan anywhere he wants to. He
can open political office for himself but he should leave the gun.
"He along with his friends can come and create his political party, do politics, become a candidate himself for the elections. If people voted for
him, good for him, he can take the leadership in his hand," Karzai said.
The Taliban have repeatedly turned down Karzai's peace offers and earlier this year withdrew from exploratory talks with the United States in Qatar.
