Typhoon passes off Japan's Pacific coast
The latest typhoon off Japan's Pacific coast has moved northward, and was downgraded to a depression on Saturday afternoon.
There is no longer any concern of heavy rain falling on the Izu Islands off Tokyo, but weather officials are cautioning against landslides, as soil has been loosened by downpours over the past few days.
One of the Izu islands, Oshima, suffered a massive landslide after recent heavy rains.
A Self Defense Force helicopter flew over the island on Saturday to check for any further damage from the latest typhoon.
The typhoon brought heavy rain to many places, including Iwata, Shizouka Prefecture, where 17 houses were inundated.
In the neighboring city of Hamamatsu, officials advised more than 175,000 people to prepare for evacuation, as heavy rains swelled a nearby river.
Flooding caused by rain also partially destroyed a concrete bridge in Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture. About 65 meters of the structure was washed away.
At the Fukushima nuclear plant, water levels rose inside barriers around tanks of contaminated wastewater. The plant released some water after confirming radioactivity levels were below the government's standards. The water was released from inside the barriers, but kept within plant premises.

UPDATE: Tepco Orders Evacuation of Fukushima Power Plant Workers
Via RT: Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has ordered the evacuation of workers from near the sea wall at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant following the earthquake, local NHK reports.
People in coastal regions around the Fukushima Prefecture coastline have been advised to move to higher ground.
"Marine threat is in place," the Japan Meteorological Agency said. "Get out of the water and leave the coast immediately."

Hi fredw,
ReplyDeleteThere were also two X class solar flares this morning, a X2.1 and a X1.7(just like prior to the 3/11/11 Japan quake). Also many M class the last few days including a M9.3 last night.
Luckily, the two typhoons look like they're staying away from Fukushima:

Have a great weekend ;-)

Hey NW - had wondered whether or not there might have been solar weather at play !
ReplyDeleteWhile the solar flares today were X class , it doesn't appear there was a CME - in contrast the large M class flare on Wednesday did have a CME . Additionally there were several other earth directed CMEs which were believed to glance off earth on Friday ( CME of 10/20 - 10/22 .)

Hope all is well , thanks for the info ! Interesting to see today's earthquake in light of the recent " stormy " space weather !
Regarding Francisco and Leika , it does seem both will nor presnt major problems for Japan ! Francisco has weakened to a tropical storm and Leika seems to be moving away from Japan !
