Fukushima updates ( August 23 , 2013 ) - the search for scapegoats intense in Japan- will the blame fall on fisherman for making the water problems worse ? . Fukushima Plant Manager Yoshida ( esophagus cancer ) laid to rest and thanked for its efforts - note effort to scapegoat him after his death .... Highlights of parade of horrible lowlights of the day !

Parade of horribles continues....

Cesium-134/137 level jumped up 10~1,000 times much as average on the top of reactor3

According to Tepco, Cs-134/137 levels jumped up in the air on the W-S-W side of the top of reactor3 building.
Cs-134 reading was 1,200 Bq/m3, Cs-137 reading was 2,600 Bq/m3. Usually it’s 1~100 Bq/m3 order.
The sampling date was 8/22/2013.
In the press conference of 8/23/2013, Tepco also commented the dust monitoring alarm went off in front of the seismic isolation building, which may have something to do with the debris removal on the top of reactor3.
However, Tepco has been removing the debris on the top of reactor3 since months ago.
Tepco is aware of the unusual trend of the radiation level of reactor3 and the surrounding area but they haven’t announced the reason.
Steam was also observed on the top of reactor3 for several times but the reason is not verified yet.

Tepco admitted the possibility of the direct leakage of coolant water to the ground

In the press conference of 8/23/2013, Tepco’s spokesman commented they suspect the coolant water of turbine buildings may be directly leaking to the ground.
The radiation level of the groundwater is not decreasing. Tepco has been insisting it’s from the retained water of underground trench.
This is the first time that Tepco mentioned the possibility of the direct leakage of the coolant water.
Because the radiation density of coolant water is significantly high and it keeps being provided, this “potential” direct leakage is way more crucial for the groundwater contamination.
No detailed data was published.

[300m3 leakage] Tepco “Radiation proof of the tank sealing material has never been tested”

In the press conference of 8/23/2013, Tepco stated they have never tested the radiation proof of the sealing material of the flange type tanks.
3 tanks have leaked contaminated water so far. These tanks are called “flange type”. They have rubber sealing instead of welding, which can leak from the flange parts.
There are at least 300 tanks of the same type in Fukushima nuclear plant and each tank contains 1,000 tones of contaminated water.
If the sealing part was deteriorated due to the extremely high level of radiation, nearly 300 of other tanks of the same type may also leak too.

[300m3 leakage] Tepco “Leaked contaminated water may have penetrated from the bottom of the tank into the ground “

On 8/22/2013, Fukushima Diary reported that a part of the leaked 300m3 water possibly flowed to the sea.
(cf, [300m3 leakage] Vice president of Tepco “Leaked water may have flowed to the sea” [URL])
In the press conference of 8/23/2013, Tepco announced there is another possibility that the leaked water penetrated to the groundwater through the base concrete and soil improvement area right underneath the tank.
The leaking tank is located upstream of the groundwater bypass wells. Tepco is planning to discharge the water pumped up from those wells without filtering, but this leakage may affect their discharging plan.

Water , water everywhere and not a safe drop to drink.......

[Column] Soon international media to treat Fukushima fishers as “the bad guys”

Soon Fukushima fishers will be given the bad name by corrupted media.
They will be considered to be the one to worsen Fukushima plant situation.

Fukushima plant is the machine to automatically produce 1,000 tones of contaminated water everyday.
They can’t keep building the tanks forever.

The facilities called ALPS are thought to be the answer.
It’s supposed to filter multiple types of radioactive material from the contaminated water so the water is supposed to be clean enough to be discharged to the sea.

Tepco needs the approval from the local fishers to discharge it but they are struggling.

Now Tepco is acting as if they were “swamped” in the contaminated water BECAUSE local fishers don’t give them the approval.

Now that the international media focuses on the contaminated water problem, it looks like the matter of time for the media to start pressuring the local fishers. (Here I’ll show the “correct” phrase so the media can copy and paste it in a couple of months. -Fukushima fishers reject giving approval for Tepco to discharge the clean filtered water due to the unscientific fear.)

Why actually do the fishers refuse it ?

The answers are simple.

1. ALPS doesn’t remove radioactive water (Tritium) at all.
2. The filtering ability deteriorates quickly.
3. It significantly deteriorated only in 2 months of the test operation.

So, even if they have ALPS into the operation, radioactive water goes through to the Pacific, unfiltered other radioactive material keep increasing to be discharged, and the facilities start leaking itself after 2 months.

ALPS can’t be the answer.

As I repeat, and as nobody repeats, the reality is “There is no technology to settle it.”.

However, none of the media focuses on this fact as far as I know.

TEPCO and Citizens Thanked and Bid Farewell to Masao Yoshida, Plant Manager of #Fukushima I Nuke Plant at the Time of the Accident

Today (August 23, 2013) was the day TEPCO held a formal, corporate funeral in Tokyo for Mr. Masao Yoshida, who died of esophagus cancer on July 9, 2013 at the age of 58. (Photo from @pochipress.)

The event was open to public, and there were many politicians (including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who left in less than 3 minutes, former Prime Minister Naoto Kan, Goshi Hosono, Banri Kaieda) and people who wanted to thank Yoshida for what he had done at the plant after March 11, 2011.
According to Toshihiro Okuyama of Asahi Shinbun, former TEPCO chairman Katsumata and former TEPCO president Shimizu came before the official start of the event, dedicated flowers and spoke with the family.

Again according to Asahi's Okuyama, over 1,000 people in total attended the event. The photo of Mr. Yoshida for the funeral showed him in blue uniform, smiling. In front of the photo, there were a megaphone and a towel with Hanshin Tigers (baseball team) logo.

There was a concerted negative campaign right after Yoshida's death that he had been very reluctant to devise countermeasures against tsunami and therefore he was directly responsible for the nuclear accident. According to Mr. Rhusho Kadota, independent journalist who interviewed Mr. Yoshida right before he was incapacitated by brain hemorrhage in July 2012, Yoshida was the one who had been pushing strongly for tsunami countermeasures at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant and trying to obtain hard evidence of a large tsunami to persuade the local municipalities to build a large seawall for the plant.

One of the plant workers who attended was one of the workers who have been tweeting from Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant since the beginning of the nuclear accident. He is known as "Sunny" on Twitter. He said he found himself to be quite calm, no big deal, until:
式場の前をアジア系の外国人の親子がとおりかかった。娘「誰のお葬式だろう?」父「あれは、吉田所長だよ。あの一生懸命頑張った所長だよ。」そう言うと二人は立ち止まり、静かに手を合わせた。そして彼らは静かにまた仲良く歩いていった。

I saw a foreign-looking, Asian father and his daughter walking in front of the ceremonial hall. Daughter: I wonder whose funeral it is. Father: That's Mr. Yoshida. That plant manager who did all he could. They stopped, and quietly put their hands together in prayer. Then they walked away quietly together.

If Mr. Yoshida is looking down at the plant right now, he would say "I told you so..." over the water problems the plant has had one after another since April this year.

TEPCO President Hirose, offering his tribute to the memory of the deceased:
