Quakin's Shakin'
Big news as we are getting to within the start of Patrick Geryl's big quake window, which opens on Sunday.
This morning we've got a strong earthquake that popped off the California coast - a 6.3 off the coast of Baja:
And, since we now have energy released here, and further south of Guatemala a while back, I'm not sure but isn't the largest stretch of Pacific coastline without a 6.0 or larger now from this morning's quake off Baja up to the Queen Charlotte Islands of BC?
Food and water stocks checked, San Diego to Vancouver BC? Window opens Sunday....don't say we didn't mention it. New Madrid is still a risk, too...

Geryl Scores Again
Well, no word back from Patrick on any changes to the schedule, so from the earthquake yesterday (7.1, Banda Sea) we should be shaking with middle-sized quakes through the 17th-23rd of December period when we expect a 9+ to 10.0 quake but please, don't ask me for a location.
If odds, so my way of seeing it, would either be the USA West Coast (some linguistics hint that way, plus there hasn't been corresponding Western Pacific quake action to offset the Japan, Indo, and Chilean quakes. We're sort of due, I figure, and it could come anywhere from the Bering Sea all the way down to SoCal.
I am concerned about friends and family up in Seattle and just hope like hell it happens out in the ocean somewhere so whole regions aren't leveled by this stuff.

Quake Watching: Patrick Geryl Get's a Bingo
That's how reader Michael reacting when the news crossed about the 7.3 quake off Japan overnight.
As you can see in the motion study (right) the quake wasn't particularly strong on the eastern coastlines of Japan, but it is interesting that it was in the area where the original 9+ quake(s) happened in 2011.
From a geophysical viewpoint, it means whatever the motion was that triggered the 2011 event is still "in play" and that more energy has built up since then. Which could make for some mighty interesting speculations
I sent a note to Patrick this morning to see how this fits with his expectations for the period ahead. As you will recall, in his earlier work, he'd mentioned Dec. 10 as a possible 8.0 magnitude window, but with the quake off Japan this morning, I wasn't sure it this was enough energy release to meet his expectations.
"George,
I mailed you Wednesday that i overlooked An important line up... This is him in total
1) The Earth is in a conjunction with Jupiter till December 9. Started November 29... So long conjunction...
2) Uranus is in an opposition with Venus from November 30 till December 8
3) On December 7-8 there is a line up Uranus - moon - earth...
So this was the trigger. When the conjunction with Jupiter ends...possible aftershocks... "
Of course, that - either way - leaves us with the Dec 13-17 period and the Dec. 21 "problem" so for now we'll just collect readings and wonder what's to come next.

Magnitude 10 temblor could happen: study
Kyodo
It is theoretically possible that the world could see a quake with a magnitude of around 10, a researcher at Tohoku University told the government's Coordinating Committee for Earthquake Prediction, Japan.
The energy of such an earthquake would be 30 times greater than the magnitude 9.0 quake that hit the northeast on March 11, 2011.
"The estimate does not mean that a magnitude 10 quake will inevitably happen," said Toru Matsuzawa, a professor at the university's Research Center for Prediction of Earthquakes and Volcanic Eruptions. "If it happens, it would take place around once every 10,000 years."
A magnitude 10.0 quake could occur if the combined 3,000 km of faults from the Japan Trench to the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench move by 60 meters, Matsuzawa said.
No magnitude 10 earthquake has ever been observed. The most powerful quake ever recorded was a magnitude 9.5 temblor in Chile in 1960.
A magnitude 10 quake would likely cause ground motions for up to an hour, with tsunami hitting while the shaking was still going on, according to the research. Tsunami would continue for several days, causing damage to several Pacific Rim nations.

Tepco to stop coolant system of SFP in reactor3 from 12/12 to 12/18 in the risk of aftershock after M7.4
Posted by Mochizuki on December 13th, 2012 · 1 Comment
At 14:02 of 12/12/2012, Tepco stopped the coolant system of SFP in reactor3 to add valves and check clack valves. It will be stopped until 12/18 while Meteorological agency is warning about the possibility of M8.0 after the M7.4 on 12/7/2012.
Tepco states the water temperature increases at 0.16℃/h without coolant system. It would be increased up to 24℃, but still it’s cooler than the safety limit of 65℃.

[Express] Fukushima worker “(If 311 happens again) We’d break through the gate with contaminated car and run”

Actual Fukushima worker Happy11311 commented on twitter liket this,

We Fukushima workers sometimes have drink together. I give them the question, “If another earthquake like 311 happens during the work, what would you do ?” About 80% of the people answer, “Just break through the front gate with the contaminated car and keep running.”
