Yesterday, October 11, 2012, photographer Jeffrey Dubinsky took a flight forLEAN [Louisiana Environmental Action Network] and LMRK [Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper] over the Bayou Corne sinkhole. After the flight, which was generously provided by Southwings, Jeffrey commented on the intense petroleum fumes experienced while flying over the sinkhole area.“I will say the odor was the heaviest and strongest I have ever experienced in all my time in Louisiana. Perhaps even worse still was that the odor was hovering directly over the community… I have no idea whatsoever how the workers can tolerate being anywhere near it.”There is no doubt that the fumes from the sinkhole and bubbling natural gas in the surrounding area have been impacting the community. Local residents have documented this along with their potentially related health symptoms through the Odor and Symptom Log available online here. [...]
Texas Brine Caused Sinkhole Calamity . . . “cavern was mined too close to the edge of the salt dome”
•October 13, 2012 •Leave a CommentExplanation of Salt Dome, Caverns & Wells at the Sinkhole

Neatly described in the Examiner -
“The 1-mile by 3-mile oil and gas industry Napoleonville Salt Dome has 53 storage caverns, 23 storage wells and 36 brine wells that it rents to seven different companies, Dow Chemical using more than any of the other companies, according to DNR.”

8:45 am, Oct. 11, 2012, Assumption Parish Police Jury: There was a short period of time that Highway 70 was closed this morning while a flare was checked at Crosstex. The flare was quite large; however, we have been advised that it was within normal operations. The road was closed as a safety measure to verify that it was actaully a flare and not a fire on Crosstex property.
4:10 pm, Oct. 11, 2012, Assumption Parish Police Jury: Crosstex advised that they will be emitting a flare within the hour that should last through the night. This flare like this morning’s flare remain within normal operations. No highway closures are anticipated.
This morning we learned more about these normal operations — or as they are now being called an emergency response mechanism:
The Advocate, Oct. 12, 2012 (Emphasis Added):
[...] Butane burned off early Thursday morning at Crosstex Energy LP’s cavern facility east of the sinkhole, shutting La. 70 South for about 10 minutes, parish officials said.Crosstex of Dallas has two caverns inside the Napoleonville Dome just east of the sinkhole.Officials with the parish and the company, Crosstex Energy LP, said Thursday that the flare was not related to the sinkhole but part of normal operations by equipment designed to burn off the gas. [...]However, the company planned by early Thursday evening to resume flaring through the night to remove butane from lines connected to the cavernsand do repairs [...]Reported to parish officials about 6 a.m., the Thursday morning flare reached a reported 40 feet for about 10 minutes and gradually lowered before going out, Boudreaux said.Jill McMillan, spokeswoman for Crosstex, said the flaring was an emergency response mechanism related to Crosstex’s Cavern No. 2, which is closer to the sinkhole of the company’s two caverns. She said company officials are working on why flaring happened. After the sinkhole’s emergence, Crosstex agreed to move butane from Cavern No. 2 to Cavern No. 1, as a precaution, so the gas is farther from the sinkhole. That process remains under way, she said.
“It’s going as expected,” McMillan said.
This situation began around the same time that the gas pipeline floated to the sinkhole’s surface:Gas pipeline found floating in giant sinkhole (PHOTO)More on the butane cavern here: Louisiana officials request 'worst-case analysis' of risk to cavern with almost a million barrels of butane -- Concerned about 'possible release' -- Pipeline was 'bent' when massive sinkhole expanded

DNR knows the aquifer is contaminated by Texas Brine
•October 12, 2012 • Leave a CommentThey say so in their new complaint.
In that missive DNR gave to Texas Brine yesterday – they put out an add-on to their earlier State of Emergency Declaration. It’s called ‘third amendment’ and is all directed at Texas Brine.
Other juicy bits include these factoids:
P.2, part 8 - The aquifer is contaminated by natural gas and is threatened by CUDE (!!!)
P.4, part 4 - They FEAR THE CAVERN WILL COMPLETLY COLLAPSE (!!!)
P.4, parts 7 & 8 – They ORDER Texas Brine to produce a plan for water testing at the cavern and give it to DNR by OCT. 19.
They ORDER Texas Brine to get a groundwater vent well going where 10 feet of gas collected by OCT. 25.
They ORDER Texas Brine to get a groundwater vent well going where 10 feet of gas collected by OCT. 25.

ooo, ooo! Will they do it? Bets, anyone? See sidebar for our ULTIMATUM COUNTDOWN!

Texas Brine claims sinkhole isn’t expanding and everything’s under control (!!)
•October 12, 2012 • 2 CommentsThey claim in their public advisory yesterday that just a few trees fell in (!). And they DIDN’T NOTICE a giant section of pipe floating in the sinkhole (!).
And they pretend the DNR isn’t mad at them and don’t reply to the charges blasted at themfrom the Assumption Parish blog.
And.. they say they are containing the sinkhole oil with those yellow booms, they just need a little re-adjusting.
Notice all the dead, dying trees in the foreground? Many surround the sinkhole for miles in all directions as seen on the fly over vids. Check our recent post “On why so many Bayou Corne trees appear to be dead or dying”. If Texas Brine’s clean up operation is to remove some dead trees they had better get the Army, Navy & Marines to help them!
