OP-DOCS
The Program

It took me a few days to work up the nerve to phone William Binney. As someone already a “target” of the United States government, I found it difficult not to worry about the chain of unintended consequences I might unleash by calling Mr. Binney, a 32-year veteran of the National Security Agency turned whistle-blower. He picked up. I nervously explained I was a documentary filmmaker and wanted to speak to him. To my surprise he replied: “I’m tired of my government harassing me and violating the Constitution. Yes, I’ll talk to you.”
Two weeks later, driving past the headquarters of the N.S.A. in Maryland, outside Washington, Mr. Binney described details about Stellar Wind, the N.S.A.’s top-secret domestic spying program begun after 9/11, which was so controversial that it nearly caused top Justice Department officials to resign in protest, in 2004.
“The decision must have been made in September 2001,” Mr. Binney told me and the cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. “That’s when the equipment started coming in.” In this Op-Doc, Mr. Binney explains how the program he created for foreign intelligence gathering was turned inward on this country. He resigned over this in 2001 and began speaking out publicly in the last year. He is among a group of N.S.A. whistle-blowers, including Thomas A. Drake, who have each risked everything — their freedom, livelihoods and personal relationships — to warn Americans about the dangers of N.S.A. domestic spying.
To those who understand state surveillance as an abstraction, I will try to describe a little about how it has affected me. The United States apparently placed me on a“watch-list” in 2006 after I completed a film about the Iraq war. I have been detained at the border more than 40 times. Once, in 2011, when I was stopped at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and asserted my First Amendment right not to answer questions about my work, the border agent replied, “If you don’t answer our questions, we’ll find our answers on your electronics.”’ As a filmmaker and journalist entrusted to protect the people who share information with me, it is becoming increasingly difficult for me to work in the United States. Although I take every effort to secure my material, I know the N.S.A. has technical abilities that are nearly impossible to defend against if you are targeted.
The 2008 amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which oversees the N.S.A. activities, are up for renewal in December. Two members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Mark Udall of Colorado, both Democrats, are trying to revise the amendments to insure greater privacy protections. They have been warning about “secret interpretations” of laws and backdoor “loopholes” that allow the government to collect our private communications. Thirteen senators havesigned a letter expressing concern about a “loophole” in the law that permits the collection of United States data. The A.C.L.U. and other groups have also challenged the constitutionality of the law, and the Supreme Court will hear arguments in that case on Oct. 29.

Veterans are being targeted in aftermath of Homeland Security smear campaign

The lawyer who helped secure the release of Brendon Raub, a former Marine forcibly incarcerated in a psychiatric ward by authorities in Virginia for political posts on Facebook, told the Alex Jones Show today that there are currently a further 20 cases in his county alone that are similar in nature to Raub’s detention.
John Whitehead of the Rutherford Institute also said that he had been contacted by numerous veterans in the aftermath of Raub’s release who had encountered similar problems with authorities attempting to have them declared mentally ill.
Whitehead attributed the high number of cases involving veterans as a consequence of the Department of Homeland Security’s aggressive campaign to demonize former servicemembers as domestic extremists.
Despite controversy at the time, DHS chief Janet Napolitano said she stood by an April 2009 DHS intelligence assessment that listed returning vets as likely domestic terrorists.
Just a month later, the New York Times reported on how Boy Scout Explorers were being trained by the DHS to kill “disgruntled Iraq war veterans” in terrorist drills.
The FBI has also gone out of its way to characterize returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan as a major domestic terrorist threat.
Whitehead pointed to efforts on behalf of health authorities in the United States to characterize distrust of authority as a mental illness under the label “oppositional defiant disorder” or ODD.
As we highlighted earlier today, veterans in particular are being targeted in police raids to confiscate their firearms based on the manufactured pretext that they are “mentally defective.”
Earlier this year, we also reported on a similar case involving David Sarti, one of the participants in the National Geographic Channel’s Doomsday Prepper show. Sarti visited his doctor complaining of chest pains, only to have the doctor later commit him to a psychiatric ward and alert authorities, before Sarti was declared “mentally defective” and put on an FBI list that stripped him of his second amendment rights.
During an interview with Alex Jones last night, Whitehead also revealed that shortly before his release, psychiatrists had threatened to forcibly medicate Raub in order to “brainwash” him.
Critics have made comparisons to the infamous psikhushka psychiatric prisons in the former Soviet Union where dissidents were sent to be isolated, brainwashed, and have their political ideas discredited amongst the general public.
Whitehead added that Brandon Raub is currently at home recovering from his ordeal and that he plans to file a civil lawsuit against the government for damages. Whitehead hopes that the shocking nature of the case will force Congress to begin investigations that could strip the state’s power to carry out civil commitments, under which victims are declared mentally ill with little due process and detained in psychiatric wards.
and the media really jumped on the story of the shooter in New York - complete with gory photos .... watch this get trumpeted as another reason for gun control....
Empire State Building Shooting Wrongly Hyped as ‘Mass Shooting’ by Media

In yet another ‘summer shooting’ involving a killer who is now being referred to by the media as the ‘Empire State Building shooter’, recently-fired gunman Jeffrey Johnson fired on a co-worker before being gunned down by police outside of the Empire State Building in downtown New York City. A total of 9 bystanders were wounded and sent to a local hospital with expectations of survival, but what was the cause of their injury?
The Empire State Building shooter may have actually had only a single target (according tovirtually all the mainstream media sources linked throughout) — a co-worker who was gunned down before the incident leading to the 9 injuries.
This makes the Empire State Building shooter case quite different than the Batman shootings and the Sikh shootings, but it doesn’t appear that way in major media.
The bulk of the wounded suspects seem to have resulted from a chaotic incident of police fire intended for Johnson, with potentially all of the injuries reportedly as a result of the police fire. Even Bloomberg admits that Johnson may have not shot any of the bystanders himself:
Investigators were attempting to determine whether Johnson shot anyone beyond his initial target. Some of the surviving victims could have been hit by the two police officers who returned fire, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
Major organizations like Reuters are already labeling it a mass shooting comparable to the Batman shooting and the Sikh temple killings, stating:
It was the third mass shooting of the summer in the United States.
Does this make it okay? Certainly not. This is an absolutely tragic event, and Johnson most certainly displayed a mentally unstable and nefarious intent to kill another human being and return fire to police. The key aspect we are examining here is how the media is looking to turn this case into another mass shooting event without actually detailing the facts in the ‘readable’ area of the article. Instead, they stick these key facts far down below the opening paragraph and summary.
What this does is cause hysteria and label it another mass shooting to those who read headlines or the first paragraph summary.
Why is this important? Because Johnson is stated to have used a semi-automatic handgun, which has led anti-gun proponents to immediately begin calling for stricter gun control and regulation.
Considering it’s already illegal to be carrying a semi-automatic weapon in downtown New York City, it’s quite obvious that Johnson really isn’t a law-abiding citizen (these stricter regulations would only affect law-abiding citizens).
This latest ‘mass shooting’ as perpetuated by the mainstream media may be the final straw in terms of gun control and regulation, and we may see many individuals like New York’s Mayor Bloomberg go into overdrive in using this incident as a catalyst to push along the legislation. I would urge you to remember that the main point of this piece is to highlight that the mainstream media will take anything and spin it to not only generate the most response, but to further an agenda.
